Like it or not, I think we're going to see this in our future. Maybe not now or in 2011, but down the road and it will start in Rockport/AP. I personally think it naturally follows the commercialization of the sport. When people start fishing because it is an indicator of social status, these feel good and exclusionary measures are coming.

There are too many crowds that will bite on some portion of the closed areas argument. Kayakers want the quiet. Skiff guides want exclusivity. Yuppie fishermen want to feel uppity and good about themselves. Duck hunters don't want airboats. Environment folks want fewer people to be there to begin with. When you add up all those groups there are a lot of dollars and a lot of "important" people, and you will get movement.

Wonder how it would really affect duck hunting? Not having the airboats would really let the birds rest without being harassed, and you'd likely see an increase in the number of birds. But, when roosting areas and feeding areas are the same lakes, what would make them actually fly? Water in the middle of the day... so one minor flight? How quick would they learn to water at night or fly to open areas to feed at night, and back to the safe zone before light where they raft all day?

I wonder if gunshots would be the next thing outlawed in a no motor zone since the noise would disturb the environment and the yuppies, and maybe it's not "safe" for kayakers.

it would affect Duck hunting by not being able to access with out walking/kayaking in. Try walking from the crabman to the middle of the lakes...

Which would be no change for most of us.... which is exactly the appeal of proposals like these. Folks get to thinking that with no airboats in there disturbing birds, they could kayak or push pole in and whack em.

I am not so sure that would be the case. The lack of pressure may increase bird numbers, but they have almost no reason to fly. Kind of like hunting RP/AP during the middle of the week. Nice to not have anyone around, but the hunting has a tendency to suck because the birds raft up and refuse to move.

Anoher issue that may influence some is the problem some are having with guides acting like they own the place. I don't know if the problems are going on in these areas with fights over areas,but i could see where some people will support this just to get the guides out of there.

I've never met a Spoony I didn't like!! Roll'em all up like a Windowshade!

So by this train of thought, your willing to give up access to an area as a means to get guides out of the area. As a guide I'll move my clients to another area. You.ve still lost the ability to access. Well I guess you could paddle in.

Seems to me there would be an easier way to get rid of the number of guides.

No Jason, I would never agree with that. You misunderstood me. I could see why some would have the thought of backing it,but they aren't looking at the big picture.. I'm NEVER for shutting down public land for another user group of the public. I think it is pure BS to even consider it. This has all been brewing for awhile. This is a topic that made me quit checking out TKF. I had it out with a couple of folks who have been pushing this crap for years. I brought up that the no prop zone was opening Pandora's box as far as regulating access to public water and you'd have thought I shot their favorite granny. As a power boat and paddle boat fisherman I can see both sides and I have a solid feel for both. Most of these folks do not. They only paddle and they want an area that is only open to paddlers.

As far as duck hunting, how exactly does an airboat hurt the seagrass? It doesn't. How does duck hunting hurt the rookeries? It doesn't. They don't want airboats running thru their kayak fishing grounds.

I understand both sides of the argument but I think we are heading in the wrong direction. Every step forward will have some far reaching implications.

I am dead set against limiting public use of public resources and limiting public access to public resources. We have plenty of limitations on what properties and water we can access as it is.

There are rules on the books in the 'no prop zone' down there. They say they are not working. Why? Lack of enforcement? Probably. If that is the case fix that, don't impose even more restrictions. Restrictions w/o enforcement are pointless.

Jason, no insult meant to you. No, I don't think closing a public area to any of the law- abiding public, guide or not,is right. It's just ( as you know) not all guides in that part of the coast are as courteous as you are. As David stated, many think that they own what belongs to all of us. Many of us on here have had incidents with "guides" down there, but I think most people who regularly visit this forum know that you are above the problems that a few other guides are guilty of.

Guides with attitude problems are not just limited to Aransas Pass. I can tell story after story of run ins with different fishing and hunting guides up and down the coast and inland.

I would hate to think we'd limit access to a piece of water based on a few who cause problems.
